The superstar line up also saw Janelle Monae do her thing on the mainstage, with a set including outfit changes and booty shaking.

Coachella attracts a quarter of a million people across the two weekends to the Empire Polo Club site in Indio Valley, near Palm Springs.

And it first came about after Pearl Jam threw a concert at the Indio Empire Polo Club to 25,000 fans in 1993.

The festival first took place on October 9-10, 1999, with Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey and Rage Against the Machine headlining.

The intention was for the festival to replicate European style festivals with smaller crowds.

The festival was cancelled in 2000 but returned in 2001 and has pretty much been in full swing annually since then.
