Cheltenham Festival 2019: Gordon Elliott reveals disappointing Samcro could yet take on Cheltenham challengeFebruary 12, 2019
STAR prospect Samcro could yet take in the Cheltenham Festival this season after all.
The Gloucestershire extravaganza remains a possibility for Gordon Elliott’s Grade 1 winner, who was recently discovered to be suffering from a lung infection.
However, even if he’s back to full fitness he’ll need to leave three very disappointing efforts this season firmly behind him.
Put in his place by both Bedrock and champion hurdler Buveur D’Air at the start of the campaign, he also suffered a heavy defeat behind Sharjah in the Ryanair Hurdle over Christmas.
Victories in the Deloitte and Ballymore last year had marked out a bright future for the son of Germany – but so far he’s yet to transfer that quality into open company.
Speaking to Sky Sports Racing, Elliott said: “Touch wood, he’s very good. He’s back in full work.

“He’ll do a bit of work at the end of this week, and we’ll see where we’re going. But I’m very happy with him.”
A tilt at the Sun Racing Stayers’ Hurdle had been mooted earlier in the week, though the eight-year-old still has an entry in the Champion Hurdle.
Elliott added: “We kept him in all the races at Cheltenham. Obviously, he’s in the Champion and still in the Sun Racing Stayers’ Hurdle.
“It’s not a definite no-no at the moment – we’ll see how the next couple of weeks go. But if not, we’ve got the Aintree Hurdle and Punchestown.

“The next 10 days will tell us.
“We’ve no target for him yet, but I’ve a couple of little things in my head – and I’ll see how the next couple of weeks go.”
