She stunned fans with her rousing speech on music, saying: “From the Motown records I wore out on the south side.”

But as she spoke the applause became so loud she had to tell the crowd to be quiet so she could continue.

“Alright, alright we got a show to do!” she said.

Michelle added: “To the Who Run the World songs that fuelled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story.

“Music helps us share ourselves, our dignity, our sorrows, our hopes and joys, it allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in.

“Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song. Is that right ladies?”

Obama’s surprise appearance delighted fans both in the audience and at home, and they took to Twitter to gush over the former First Lady’s class and elegance.

One wrote: “Michelle Obama said just three words and everyone at the Grammys started cheering. This woman is incredible.”

A second said: “Michelle Obama was the best part of the Grammys, why is there even more to watch honestly.”

Another added: “#MichelleObama had us tearing up as soon as she said #Motown at the #GRAMMYs.”
