Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne slammed for telling X Factor contestant ‘you really are fat’ as old clip resurfaces

SIMON Cowell and Sharon Osbourne have been dubbed “cruel” after a resurfaced X Factor audition clip saw them tell one hopeful that she can only go through to boot camp if she goes on a diet.

Their fellow judge Louis Walsh also appeared in the clip where he described the contestant’s chances as “mission impossible.”

A clip from The X Factor’s 2004 series has shocked social media users

The clip – taken from The X Factor’s first series in 2004 – was shared on Twitter and has since gone viral with social media users expressing disbelief at the judges’ critique.

It begins with contestant Samantha explaining that she had cancelled her honeymoon to Barbados in order to attend the auditions.

After she performed her take on Mariah Carey’s classic track ‘Hero’, Simon told Samantha: “You sound nice but look like a shop girl. That’s the problem.”

She begged: “I know what you’re saying… that I’m overweight.”

Showing his Mr Nasty credentials, Simon hit back: “You are, you really are” – leaving a tearful Samantha to promise she was “working on it.”

Sharon decided to put the hopeful through to boot camp

As it came time to decide if Samantha would proceed to boot camp, Louis Walsh claimed: “I’m going to say no because I think it’s mission impossible.”

Simon decided: “Do you know, I’m going to say yes for the simple reason that I want to see what this girl is willing to do because I think she’s got a nice voice and I like her ambition.”

With the deciding vote on Samantha’s future, Sharon shockingly declared: “Go on a diet and I’ll see you at the next round.”

Samantha returned to the boot camp stage where she announced she was seven months into a pregnancy, but unfortunately she didn’t make it any further in the competition.

Simon Cowell said he wanted to see “what this girl is willing to do.”

One fan defended the clip, writing: “I find this so funny. It’s what The X Factor was good for if you didn’t want the truth, don’t go for it!”

Another put: “Sadly this is/was the harsh reality of the music industry back then and probably still is in some places – I’m not shocked at this at all.”

A third social media user put: “So cruel! It’s how flippant they are about it, as if she was thanking them though.”

Show bosses are now hastily trying to negotiate a new visa which will allow him to return to perform on the upcoming tour and begin recording. He has landed a record deal and his winners’ single The Power Of Love, featuring James Arthur, is powering up the charts.

In an exclusive interview Dalton revealed: “I need to get a new visa. I will have to leave the UK for a bit as you’re not allowed to just stay for ever.

“Hopefully my visa will be sorted out quickly.”
