Man Utd prodigy Tahith Chong scores Beckham-like free kick for Under-23sJanuary 12, 2019
TAHITH CHONG has been tipped to become a Manchester United star – and tonight he showed exactly why.
The youngster, 19, curled in a wonder free-kick for United Under-23s but could not prevent defeat in against Fulham in the Premier League 2.
With the scores at 0-0, the winger took on the responsibility for Ricky Sbragia’s side and boy did he strike it well.
Think vintage David Beckham, with whip and fizz that leaves the helpless goalkeeper motionless on his line, watching it sail into the top corner.
This time, the unfortunate ‘keeper was George Wickens who had absolutely no chance of stopping Chong’s spectacular effort.
But despite going in front just before the half-hour mark, Manchester United were pegged back by the visiting Cottagers at Leigh Sports Village.
Mattias Kait headed in an equaliser from a corner just six minutes later before Elijah Adebayo put Fulham in front.
Stephen Humphrys scored a third for the Londoners with an hour played and with United struggling to mount any sort of comeback, it finished 3-1.
Chong went down with what appeared to be a knee injury late on but all the talk – rightly so – was about Chong and his sumptuous free-kick.
The winger came on for his competitive first-team debut last weekend in the FA Cup win over Reading.
He replaced Juan Matter with half an hour to play and looked a real threat, constantly wanting the ball and looking to drive forward and create.
Despite picking up a booking, the Dutch talent impressed and even latched on to the end of his own misplaced pass, showing a lightning-quick burst of speed.
His involvement tonight, along with fellow prodigy Angel Gomes, means the pair will not travel to Wembley with the first team to face Tottenham on Sunday.
