Nick Knowles says his iconic red budgie smugglers have cost him the chance of a sexy calendar and ruined his reputation as a hunkDecember 8, 2018
TURNING bay leaves into washing lines, old sleeping bags into a drying rack and melted knives into an iron, Nick Knowles was desperate to be known as the Bear Grylls of the I’m A Celeb jungle.
But sadly for the DIY SOS host turned chart crooner, he will only be remembered for one thing — a tiny piece of red nylon barely covering his manhood.

Speaking to The Sun about those painfully small trunks in his only post-exit newspaper interview, Nick, 56 said: “I had to wear them as I didn’t want to get my clothes wet.
“But it is terribly embarrassing for my sons that I appeared on national television in red Speedos.”
The budgie smugglers also put paid to one of his major career ambitions — releasing his own calendar.
Having branched out and released a country album last year, who would have bet against him going down that route?

But a downbeat Nick said: “It’s now about as likely as a second album.”
I am meeting him at the plush Versace hotel, where he is recovering from his jungle exploits.
I have been a showbiz journalist for more than a decade and I can safely say I have never before had a celebrity spend the first part of the chat showing off their torso, bulging biceps and two-stone weight loss — while changing between two tops, several times over.
And I have certainly never conducted an interview with a man lying on a bed strumming a guitar and singing a love song.
On the show Nick didn’t need much convincing to play his guitar[/caption]
In Nick’s world, playing guitar on a bed in front of a woman he has only just met is him being a “gentlemen”.
It is a word he uttered in the jungle more times than Harry Redknapp mentioned jam roly-polys. It is clearly an obsession.
Nick’s decision to appear on the ITV show came as a surprise, as it is assumed he does not need the money, his profile is already high and he is not short of female attention.
But he clearly wanted to right what he felt were some wrongs about him, namely his reputation with the opposite sex.

The twice-married presenter has four sons and a daughter — ranging in age from four to 25 — from three different mothers.
He also has form for dating glamorous women half his age.
So is Nick the mega-cheesy, rugged love god his reputation suggests? Not according to Nick.
He told me: “I’m a big romantic. I’m a big one for buying flowers, or doing things on the spur of the moment. I like going for surprise dates, like organising a picnic.
Nick insists he is a big romantic and often calls himself a gentleman[/caption]
“With such cheap flights all over Europe, very often the nicest thing for me to do is to take them on a plane, because that way I don’t get recognised.
“I’ve been on dates all over — Barcelona, Tromso, you name it.”
I got a taste of the Knowles charm during our interview.
Often an interview would mean a chat in the hotel bar. But Nick does things differently — and I was serenaded in his bedroom.

Though of course, he remained a “gentleman”.
When discussing waking up in the jungle and Anne Hegerty breaking wind, which sparked hysterics from hosts Dec Donnelly and Holly Willoughby, he said: “Everybody farts at some stage. It would be ungentlemanly to talk about.
“Every evening I would let Anne go up to bed and go to sleep, then I would go in and go to sleep.”
And explaining why he refused to pick up Emily Atack’s knickers when they fell off the camp washing line, he said: “When the girls were drying their underwear I would ask John (Barrowman) to handle it.

“Being a gay man, it didn’t matter so much, because I thought it was the gentlemanly thing.”
Explaining his passion for chivalry even further, he said: “Every now and again on DIY SOS one of the women would ask me to take something out of their handbag. I’d say, ‘I can’t go in your handbag’. A gentleman never goes in a lady’s handbag. You just don’t.”
As viewers, campmates — and now me — are all too aware, Nick doen’t need much persuading to pick up a guitar and belt out some songs.
But now he has renewed vigour after a campaign by DJ Chris Moyles saw his version of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love top the iTunes chart.

Chris was inspired by a story Nick told in the jungle about how he jammed with Scottish band Biffy Clyro on a rooftop bar in London’s Soho, which led to him getting a record deal.
The band, however, accused Nick of slightly bending the truth. So what actually happened? Nick explains: “All I’ve said was I was playing on a roof and Biffy were there.
“I was in my mate’s hotel when I bumped into them. I helped them load the van with speakers and I said, ‘Where are you off to?’.
“They said the NME Awards and I said, ‘If you do well, come back and I’ll buy you a drink’.
“So when they came back, the lead singer and bass player were in the bar and I was playing guitar and I bought them a bottle of champagne.
“And then I handed the guitar to him and he played a couple of songs. Then we sat and drank and chatted. It wasn’t like we did a performance.
“I stayed in contact with them, they invited me to see them in Hammersmith. It just wasn’t a full session.”
Now he is out of the jungle, Nick is nursing himself back into eating normally, having mushrooms and a banana as his first meal.

He is also nursing bumps, bruises and a dislocated knuckle.
But that is nothing to a man who has smashed his collarbone, broken his nose four times and his ankle and wrist twice in motorbike crashes down the years.
So will Nick be jumping back on his bike to find love again after failing to snare any jungle beauties?
He said: “I am single and if love comes along that would be lovely and great, but having said that, I’m not sitting there looking for it.”

But any woman out there looking for some Nick Knowles action will have to be ready to rough it a bit.
Talking about his next TV ambition, Nick said: “I like to sleep outdoors, I’m fascinated by the all the animals so I would love to make documentaries.”
Just hopefully not in those red pants please, Nick.
