ANNE Hegerty has insisted she was ruled out of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’s gruelling Bushtucker Trials on ‘medical grounds’ – not because of her size.

The Chase’s Governess – who lost one stone during the 18 days on the ITV series – admitted she was ‘freaked out’ by the tasks so much so it impacted on her ‘psychologically’, and meant she was not allowed to take on the challenge.

The 60 year old said: “I was quite freaked out by the first Bushtucker trial and only getting two stars.

“I could have got four, but either I couldn’t line up the numbers on the padlocks or I wasn’t pushing the spring down properly.

“I don’t want to go into more details as I’d be giving away production secrets.

“But the ‘exemption on medical grounds’ thing thereafter was really more on the basis of how I’d reacted psychologically to that one, rather than because I’m a fat lump or anything.”

The mastermind – who was the fifth campmate to be booted off this season’s ITV show – opened up about her battle with autism on the programme.

But the star hopes viewers, and fellow contestants, weren’t praising her out of ‘pity’.

She told Metro Online: “I do wonder if, when people are saying, ‘She did so amazingly!’ they really mean something like ‘She did so amazingly, considering she’s autistic.’

“I don’t want pity, and I don’t want to find that The Governess is somehow less intimidating because she’s been seen screaming and weeping.”

Anne also does not want people to think her appearance on the show, hosted by Declan Donnelly and Holly Willoughby, was to ‘raise awareness’ for her condition, although she is glad it has started discussions.

She added: “A lot of people seem to think I went on in order to raise awareness about autism.

“It’s brilliant if it’s told people a bit more about what autism is like and what autistic people are like.

“My brother showed me the letter from the little boy who went viral and the clip from breakfast TV with him and his mother (and Jenny), and I think it’s delightful – I want to write back to him.”

Anne has openly admitted she signed up for the show for ‘money and fame’.

She said: “I’m afraid my intentions weren’t nearly so elevated – I did it for money and fame.”
