Michelle Obama reveals the Queen put her at ease – and said Royal protocol was ‘rubbish’December 4, 2018
Mrs Obama was speaking at an event to promote her new autobiography Becoming at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.
The Mirror told how Mrs Obama recounted to author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, who was hosting the event, that the Queen made an effort to put her at ease.
“I had all this protocol buzzing in my head and I was like ‘don’t trip down the stairs and don’t touch anybody, whatever you do’,” she said.
“And so the Queen says ‘just get in, sit wherever’ and she’s telling you one thing and you’re remembering protocol and she says ‘Oh it’s all rubbish, just get in’.”
Mrs and President Obama visited the UK in April 2016 with Prince Phillip, then 94, driving the couple to lunch.
Previously President Obama said the Queen was “truly one of his favourite people”.
Speaking in 2016 the BBC reported he said: “Earlier today Michelle and I had the honour to join Her Majesty and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh as their guests at Windsor Castle where we conveyed the good wishes of the American people.”
