How Generous! Barack Obama Tipped $40 After Getting TacosNovember 6, 2018
Barack Obama knows how to work up an appetite! The former president attended a get-out-the-vote rally in Miami, Florida, on Friday, November 2, with gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Gillum and senate candidate Bill Nelson, and when the event was over, the trio hit up a local eatery for some food.
The dinning establishment of choice was Coyo Taco, and when Obama, Gillum and Nelson arrived around 3:45 p.m. local time, patrons and employees alike were apparently starstruck.
“I want everybody to vote,” Obama, 57, reportedly told the crowd that had gathered as he entered the restaurant.
So what did the former president and his political pals snack on? Per the Miami Herald, Obama announced the meal was his treat and then proceeded to order cochinita pibil, pollo al carbon, camaron, guacamole, esquites and a Coca-Cola for Gillum.
While waiting for his food, which cost about $35, Obama chatted with patrons and snapped pictures with eager employees behind the register, quipping, “This is a health code violation.”
He also told a man who asked for a selfie, “You voted, so you get a photo.”
According to Miami Herald reporter David Smiley, Obama wasn’t just generous with his time, but with his wallet, too. The journalist tweeted that the onetime Commander in Chief gave employee Kali Hughes $40 for taking his order, meaning he left her approximately a 100 percent tip. Not too shabby!
Obama has somewhat of a history of causing a fuss when he goes out to eat. Back in July he and former vice president Joe Biden, 75, stopped by Washington D.C.’s nonprofit Dog Tag Bakery for lunch and drew quite a large crowd by the time the meal was over. “Best lunch break ever!” one person who managed to catch a glimpse of the political pair wrote on Instagram at the time.
