Body image advocate Ariel Winter wears whatever she wants, wherever she wants. And on Sunday, Oct. 28, she wanted to wear one of the most modest ensembles she’s ever modeled on the red carpet.

At the A Time for Heroes event in Culver City, California, which marked the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s 30th anniversary, the Modern Family star beamed in a pair of boyfriend-cut jeans and a blush-colored, long-sleeve silk blouse. The apparently slimmed-down actress — who recently revealed on Instagram that she’s working out with celebrity trainer MackFit — also gave Us Weekly an update on her interactions with the social media trolls who often criticizes her posts.

“Twitter is a lot worse for me. Instagram, people are a lot nicer,” she tells Us. “On Twitter… I’m just not savvy at it.”

“Sometimes, I go on [Twitter] and I’ll just make like a short statement that came into my head and I think it’s so important and I’m thinking of something and I’ll write it down. And then everybody’s like, ‘Oh my god. That was horrible. You’re so stupid,’ like, all these things,” she continues. “People… don’t really get the full picture, I think, on Twitter or Instagram.”

In July, Winter took a break from Twitter. At the time, a rep for the actress told Us her disappearance was due to “the constant negativity she experiences,” adding, “she needs a moment to breath and enjoy herself without judgement.”

Winter understands the power of words, and often hilariously slams trolls who body shame her on social media, whether for wearing clothing printed with provocative mottos or outfits they deem too revealing or risqué.

Since rejoining the 280-character platform, things have been looking up for her. “It has gotten a little better. I did fall back into saying maybe some snarky things to people who are saying some mean things. I wasn’t trying to be mean to them, but just a little sassy about it,” the 20-year-old actress tells Us. “If they tweet me something that’s just really rude and ridiculous, I may write something funny back. But if I do that, you know, people send you more mean things.” So, she adds, “I’ve gone back to just, you know, you reply to people that are nice.”

Her other strategy? Just ignore it — though she admits it’s easier said than done: “You always try to not let it bother you. I think there’s a lot of things people say that sometimes you’re like ah, this doesn’t really bother me, but it kind of does.”

As for stepping away from social media, the star revealed she will continue to go that route from time to time. “Human interaction has gone way down. So, it’s one of those things that I think is just important for people in general,” she muses. “Maybe take a break from those things and live in your real life.”
